BOOKS :

(If you are not a book reader we want to encourage you to try any of the following. There are many topics where books are the only in-depth source of information for you, your children and your business. We encourage critical thinking and this is a good place to start.) Some books, especially biographies can seem like going somewhere in a time capsule to a different time and place.

  • The Bible (Old & New Testament). This book has influenced more people than any other book in history. If you have not read it you may be surprised by its contents.

  • The College Scam: How America's Universities Are Bankrupting and Brainwashing Away the Future of America's Youth by Charlie Kirk.

  • Gifted Hands, the Ben Carson Story. About a young boy who grew up in poverty and with prodding of his mother started reading books, who later became one of the most respected Neurosurgeons in the world and became Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

  • War of Words by Paul David Tripp. What we say matters and Tripp gets to the heart of the matter.

  • Point Man by Steve Ferrar. If you are a Dad or wish to become one you will find this book very useful.

  • Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington. Originally a slave, he worked to free his fellow slaves from mental ignorance by creating an agricultural hands-on school and training center.

  • Fault Lines by Voddie T. Baucham Jr. Exposes the anti-God and anti-Biblical attitude that Critical Race Theory is based on. If your children are in college or will be, this is a must-read for you to understand what they will likely be exposed to.

  • Listening - The Forgotten Skill by Madelyn Burley-Allen. John Wiley & Sons Publisher

  • The Power of Habits by Charles Duhigg. Learning how to control the routines that are part of our everyday lives.

  • Abduction: How Liberalism Steals Our Children's Hearts and Minds by Dr. Carol Swain and Steve Feazel

  • Why You Can't Stay Silent by Tom Minnery. Explores defending the rights God has given us in this nation.

  • The American Miracle: Divine Providence in the Rise of the Republic by Michael Medved.

  • If You Can Keep It by Eric Metaxas. A review of America's greatness and a reminder of our crucial role in living out what the founders entrusted to us.

  • Glenn Beck's Common Sense by Glenn Beck. The case against an out-of-control government. Inspired by Thomas Paine's “Common Sense”.

  • The Great Republic by Sir Winston Churchill. His first hand impressions of America.

Here are some resources to help you with your own "Critical Thinking"

Definitions

Critical Thinking - What is it ?

Critical Thinking is the disciplined process of actively and skillfully analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing information in order to form reasoned judgments and make sound decisions.

It Involves :

  • Questioning assuptions and claims rather than accepting them at face value

  • Identifying biases, logical fallacies and gaps in evidence

  • Distinguishing facts form opinion or speculation

  • Weighing alternative perspectives and possible outcomes

  • Drawing conclusions that are supported by logic and reliable evidence

In short, critical thinking is clear, rational and reflective thinking aimed at deciding what to believe or do.

Biography - The story of someone's life, usually someone who is important for some reason.
Autobiography - The story of someone's life written by themself. Sometimes this may with the aid of a supporting co-author.
Biases - refers to a systematic inclination, prejudice, or deviation that favors one side, outcome, or perspective over others—often unfairly or inaccurately. Example in a social sense : refers to a systematic inclination, prejudice, or deviation that favors one side, outcome, or perspective over others—often unfairly or inaccurately. Example: a prejudice against those of a particular race.
In short, bias involves a consistent lean away from neutrality, accuracy, or fairness.

The importance of reading :

You basically have two choices: You can do your own critical thinking, which requires effort on your part and books are a great resource for doing that. Or you can let others do your thinking for you.

Another part of Critical thinking is learning how to discriminate between various sources. The internet is great in that it provides a great deal of options, sort of like a huge banquet table. Then the responsibility for what you want to be viewing and putting into your head is up to you. The offerings range from inspiring to satanic. Here is where "Habits" come into the picture. By viewing certain material regularly you, over time, are developing a habit. We will be covering more about "Habits" later but for now there is a good book on this topic list above.

With experience you learn which authors and other resources you can trust and the ones which have not earned your trust.
